with an economic showdown. president obama and mitt romney squared off for the first of three presidential debates last night. in what some are calling a polite war of words, the candidates sparred over job creation, taxes and the future of health care. nbc's tracie potts is in denver for us. she has a preview. good morning to you, tracie. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. the pressure was on for romney to perform, to back up his ideas with details, taking on the man that even republicans called one of the most skilled debaters in modern politics. the point of this debate was to make differences clear on lowering the debt. >> you said you'd cut the deficit in half. it's four years later, we still have trillion-dollar deficit. >> the way we do is for additional cut, we ask for a dollar of additional revenue, paid for, as i indicated earlier, by asking those of us who have done very well in this country to contribute a little bit more to reduce the deficit. >> reporter: the president insisted romney would spend $5 trillion on tax breaks favoring the wealthy. >> math, common sense and our history show

obama spoke to either jim lehrer or the audience. this was, in general, a good debate. there were some annoyed appearances ffom the president, some inpatient attempts to interrupt the flow of things by mitt romney, but fairly ssall. lots of policy. for reporters and voters who thought a lot of times this campaign has ordered a little bit too on -- to much on the cynical, there was it kind of policy tonight. you heard president obama at one. take the president -- take mitt romney to task. that did not happen until the last half-hour of the debate. for the better part of the first hour, it was mitt romney who was pn offense, challenging the president's record, addressing him directly, accusing the president of misrepresenting mitt romney. toward the end, we heard mitt romney say, you are entitled to your own house and plain, but not your own facts. there was a fair amount of %+arring back and forth. generally speaking, there demeanor's seemed like, in mitt romney's case, he is prepared to be president, and president obama is struggling with some of the strains of being president with som

's economic leadership in a civil debate heavy on substance. president obama appeared more subdued, offering extensive policy details holding back attacks he used on romney on the campaign trail. the president left out the frequent attack about mr. romney's 47% comments. a cnn opinion research poll taken after the debate shows 67% of registered voters believe mitt romney had a better night. 25% said president obama. a cbs poll says 46% of uncommitted voters said romney had the stronger performance. 22% said it was the president. the headline in this mornings usa today, romney seizes offense on obama's record. romney takes fight to obama. after a handshake in the middle of the stage and talk of the president's 20th wedding anniversary, they got down to business with details on taxes and debt and what is best for this country's middle class. >> this is where there's a difference because governor romney's plan calls for a $5 trillion tax cut on top of the bush tax cuts and military spending that the military hasn't asked for. it's $8 trillion. how we pay for that, reduce the deficit and make th

obama leading 49% to 46% among likely voters. again, within the margin of error and closer than it was two weeks ago. on the direction of the country, 40% say we're heading in the right direction. 53% say things are on the wrong track. 40% is the highest mark for this question in 3 1/2 years. there's also growing optimism about the economy. 57% say it's improving. that's the highest number this poll has recorded on this question. one thing not going the president's way here, his handling of the situations in egypt and libya. more people disapprove than approve on that question. as for mr. romney, it appears he's still paying for the comments about the 47%, 51% of respondents to this nbc poll say recent impressions made by the republican candidate make him less favorable. they view him less favorably. 28% say more favorably. >>> both presidential candidates were off the trail as they prepared for tonight's debate. the president spent the past couple of days working with his team in nevada. took a quick break to visit the hoover dam. why not while you're there. mitt romney was in

's look at these numbers. president obama still comfortably ahead. in fact, he's picked up a point. he's at 51%. mitt romney is at 43%. both campaigns think this one is getting more difficult by the moment for mitt romney to win. however -- and this is where it gets fascinating -- in virginia, the president's lead has shrunk to just two points, within the margin of error. last month president obama led by five points there. in florida, mitt romney has closed the gap as well. he's now statistically tied in the state of florida. it is a one-point lead. 47%-46%. al hunt, it is fascinating. ohio seems to be on its own as far as the swing states go. but we could show other swing state polls in colorado, in nevada, in north carolina. these states are really getting tight, to such a degree that a great performance by romney tonight could change the dynamic. >> conceivably, but i don't think it's quite that close yet. i think you certainly see it, as you point out, in florida and virginia. you don't see it in ohio. wisconsin it looks like it's actually widening. iowa, it's four to six. and the
